BC HIGH TOO TALL FOR ARLINGTON; 67-48
Woburn, MA. 2/19/18. With precious little time to recover from the previous night’s enervating overtime struggle with Needham, the Arlington Boys Basketball team wilted in the second half against BC High early yesterday afternoon in the consolation game of the Comcast IAABO 27 Classic in Woburn 67-48.
The Spy Ponders were overpowered on the boards at both ends by BC’s dominant height. Seniors 6’5” Spencer Riley and 6’6” Troy Salmans rarely allowed Arlington an offensive rebound, while in their offensive end, they secured second and third chances for their shooters throughout the game.
Several times in the first half Arlington fell behind by double figures and, reminiscent of the night before, fought their way back. Sophomore Bensley Joseph’s three pointer with 1:25 left in the half closed the gap to 33-30 to keep the Spy Ponders very much in the game.
But Arlington came out for the second half with their needle on empty, and BC took full advantage with a 17-4 run that lasted the entire third quarter and decided the outcome.
Early in the fourth the Eagle lead had ballooned to 22 points when Arlington junior Sam Swift went on a one-man 8-0 run, burying consecutive three pointers and hitting a difficult driving layup in the lane, to cut the lead to 14. But that’s as close as his team would get.
Swift was the only Spy Ponder in double figures for the game with 10 points. Senior co-captain Ben Wasco added nine and freshman Brendan McNamara eight.
BC High senior co-captain Travis Evee led all scorers with 21. Senior Matt Thompson added 17 and Riley 15.
Arlington, now one of a handful of teams at 15-5, waits for the MIAA to determine whether they will hold on to the top seed in Div 2 North. The outcome will be revealed this Friday.
